Assessment at the elementary level is ongoing and designed to support student learning. Teachers use a variety of methods, including:
- Classroom observations
- Student work and projects
- Conversations and demonstrations of learning
- Student self-reflection
Assessment is:
- Ongoing and formative
- Focused on student growth
- Used to guide instruction and next steps
Student progress is communicated through report cards and ongoing communication with families (e.g., MyEdBC, emails, meetings, virtual learning platforms: SpacesEdu).
Students may participate in provincial assessments as part of the BC education system. These assessments are designed to support student learning and provide information about how students are developing key skills over time. Provincial assessments may include: Foundational Skills Assessments in literacy and numeracy (Grades 4 and 7)
These assessments:
- Are not used for grades or report card marks
- Help teachers understand student progress in key areas
- Support planning and instruction to meet student needs
- Provide a snapshot of learning at a specific point in time
Students receive appropriate support and accommodations to ensure accessibility.
