Our Mission

To serve British Columbia’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community by providing high-quality, ASL-rich learning opportunities for young people. As part of the Burnaby School District, the BC School for the Deaf supports every student in reaching their full learning potential while developing a strong and positive self-identity.

Our Philosophy

The BC School for the Deaf recognizes both American Sign Language (ASL) and English as languages of instruction for Deaf students. We believe:

  • All students have the right to learn and be respected in a positive and supportive school climate
  • Students learn best in environments that provide clear, accessible, and effective communication
  • Students should have access to a wide range of programs and services that support their learning and growth
  • Exposure to Deaf role models strengthens identity, confidence, and future aspirations
  • Deaf students have the right to fully embrace and express their Deaf identity

Our Commitment

We are committed to providing accessible, ASL-rich education, fostering Deaf identity and culture, promoting inclusion, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Our Values

We value:

  • ASL, Deaf culture, and identity
  • Equity and accessibility
  • Respectful and inclusive relationships
  • Student voice and self-advocacy
  • Collaboration with families and the community
  • Excellence in learning and personal growth

Services

The BC School for the Deaf offers a full range of learning opportunities and educational options designed to meet the diverse needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

All instruction is supported by qualified Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing who are trained to provide accessible, language-rich, and inclusive education. Interpreters are also provided in classrooms with non-signing teachers to ensure full access to instruction.

Students benefit from the presence of Deaf adult role models who support positive identity development and cultural connection.

A comprehensive support team is available to promote student success. This team includes interpreters, intervenors, youth child-care workers, Indigenous youth engagement workers, educational assistants, and speech-language pathologists.

Additional support is provided by professionals such as an audiologist, psychologist, counsellors, learning support specialists, and behaviour specialists. These services are delivered in partnership with the Burnaby School District, the Well-Being Program, and Fraser Health.
